With the stressors in our environment, germs, and poor dietary choices, our immune systems can easily become weakened. Then we catch whatever bug comes along. We are more likely to catch colds and other viruses when our immunity is down.
In addition to being highly contagious, one of the problems with viruses is they mutate so quickly. Scientists may formulate a vaccine to treat one strain of a virus and in the meantime it has morphed into something else.
Essential oils, however, are very complex in nature. The variety of constituents in an oil make them ideal for combating “superbugs”. Think about this: One essential oil can have anywhere from 200 to 800 chemical constituents. If a virus or bacteria mutates or becomes resistant to one component, an essential oil employs its other constituents to stop the bug’s progression. It’s like having a gang of superheroes at your disposal. If one chemical constituent doesn’t protect you, you can be pretty sure there will be others who will save the day!
Essential oils have a history of effectively combating contagious bugs. During a plague in the 15th century, a small band of thieves robbed the dead and dying. Although the plague was highly contagious, not one of this band was infected, despite being exposed to it daily. Eventually, the thieves were caught. In exchange for a more lenient punishment, they disclosed the formula of herbs, spices and oils they used to protect themselves.
Young Living has an essential oil blend that is based on that historical legend. Thieves is a synergistic blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, and rosemary. This proprietary blend of pure essential oils was tested at Weber State University and found to have a 99.3 percent effective rate against airborne microorganisms when diffused for only 20 minutes.
The oils in Thieves are antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral.
A few easy ways to benefit from Thieves essential oils is to apply a few drops to your feet, run a cold air diffuser for 15 minutes several times a day, or put several drops in a capsule and take it internally. Another option is to add it to hot water and drink it as a tea or add a few drops to a spoonful of coconut oil.
Thieves is one of the oils that I will always have on hand. It is a “super hero” that just may save the day. It smells good, too! Here are some essential oil singles known for their antiviral properties:
- Basil
- Cinnamon Bark
- Clove
- Eucalyptus blue
- Eucalyptus globulus
- Eucalyptus citriatora
- Eucalyptus polybractea
- Eucalyptus radiata
- Galbanum
- Hyssop
- Jasmine
- Marjoram
- Melaleuca
- Melissa
- Mountain Savory
- Myrrh
- Oregano
- Patchouli
- Peppermint
- Pine
- Ravensara
- Rosemary
- Rosewood
- Sage
- Tarragon
- Thyme
- Idaho Tansy

Science is now beginning to acknowledge the value of the healing substances found in essential oils. Clinical research has shown that essential oils are highly antiviral and anti-infectious. In 1995, Dr. Jean C. Lapraz discovered that there are two essential oils in which no bacteria or virus could survive. This is a significant breakthrough since there are so many life threatening viruses and drug resistant bacteria. A recent study done at Weber University has proven that four essential oils will kill 100% of the bacteria and virus in any room where they are diffused.
Doctors once predicted antibiotics would vanquish infectious diseases. But the bugs are rapidly overwhelming today’s medicines. Bacteria naturally evolve to avoid antibiotics, a process first spotted just five years after penicillin’s debut in the 1940s. But resistance appears to have speeded up in the last decade, largely because antibiotics are being overused giving the germs more chances to mutate.
Dr. Valnet points out that pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria do not become resistant to essential oils as they do to modern-day synthetic antibiotic drugs. He states, “Infectious microbes do not appear to become accustomed to the essential oils as they do to the many forms of treatment using antibiotics.” One reason virus and bacteria cannot mutate with the essential oils is because of the chemical constituents that make up essential oils. One essential oil can have anywhere from 200-800 chemical constituents. It is impossible for a virus to mutate and adapt to that many chemical constituents. Drugs are made by isolating one or two constituents. A virus can easily mutate and adapt to the drug, making it useless.
Although the powerful medicinal value of essential oils is only now being rediscovered by modern medical science, it has actually been known for centuries. In fact, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by ancient cultures, due to their phenomenal healing properties. Dr. Valnet states, “In recent years both doctors and the public have re-discovered the medical value of essential plant oils, but the idea of using their properties to maintain or regain health goes back to antiquity… The Romans had their knowledge of essential oils from the Greeks, who in turn had received it from the Egyptians… “Hippocrates, for example, tackled the plague epidemic in Athens by fumigating the whole city with aromatic essences of plant oils. Later, in the 19th century, it is known that perfumery workers always showed an almost complete immunity during cholera outbreaks.”
In tests conducted in France by Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory, the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils—including pine, thyme, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, cloves and cinnamon—was studied in order to test the ability of the oils to purify the air of harmful disease-causing bacteria. First, Professor Griffon set up a number of Petri dishes approximately 15cm from ground level in an open room, allowing them to stand for 24 hours, the germs from the air being collected naturally as they settled into the open Petri dishes. After 24 hours he analyzed the dishes, finding them to contains 210 colonies of various microbes, including numerous molds and staphylococci. He then sprayed the mixture of essential oils in the form of an aerosol into the air in the room. After only 15 minutes, only 14 colonies of microorganisms out of the original 210 were left alive. After 30 minutes, only FOUR colonies of the original 210 were left. Importantly, ALL of the potentially harmful disease- causing molds and staphylococci had been killed within the first 30 minutes.
In another French experiment, the number of pathogenic microorganisms in various locations were measured. In a forest, there were found to be five pathogenic microorganisms in the air for every one cubic meter. In an average apartment, there were found to be 20,000 microbes in the air per cubic meter. In public stores, there were found to be nine million microbes in the air per cubic meter. On the top of a work table there were found to be five million microbes per square meter. On a carpet, nine million. And in the air of a large hospital there were found to be on average 10,000 microbes per cubic meter. According to Dr. Valnet, when an inquisitive doctor put some of the microbe-laden air from the hospital into a flask containing just a few drops of essential oils, 40% of the microbes were destroyed in only 20 minutes, 80% in an hour, and 100% in nine hours!
These scientific studies have finally jolted a small number of far-sighted researchers within the American medical and scientific community to sit up and take note of the incredible antimicrobial power of essential oils, particularly in light of today’s plague of deadly antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. As today’s growing plague of pathogenic, antibiotic resistant bacteria, mutating viruses, infectious fungi and disease causing parasites are becoming more & more of a threat, it is comforting to know we can have such powerful weapons as therapeutic grade essential oils.
Every family needs to know about them.

Young Living’s goal has always been to share the health benefits of true essential oils with the world. This goal involves knowing which essential oils are truly therapeutic-grade and which are inferior. In fact, when Young Living inspects potential oils from partner distilleries, more than 70 percent fail to meet our stringent standard for potency. In other words, without the exact blend of naturally-occuring plant chemicals – the Young Living Therapeutic Grade standard – an essential oil can lose much of its therapeutic properties and fail to produce the desired effect.
1. Every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired therapeutic effect.
2. Young Living is able to make this assertion because our strict cultivation process – illustrated by the Four Ps – guarantees the optimal potency of every Young Living essential oil.
PLANTS:
The key to producing true Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) essential oils begins with each plant. An oil’s potency can be affected not only by selecting the proper plant to cultivate, but also where the plant is grown, the quality of soil in which the seed is planted, and even the time of day it’s harvested.
Young Living has extensive experience selecting the correct species of plant for desired oil potency, planting under optimal conditions, using ideal soil and natural methods to encourage growth, and knowing the precise time to harvest each crop. We select only those plants that produce the most active and widest array of constituents. Only plants that meet our standard are used, otherwise no amount of preparation can extract YLTG oils. Young Living will continue to perfect growing and harvesting techniques using our network of farms in Idaho, Utah, France, and Ecuador.
PREPARATION:
Once the optimal soil, plant, cultivation, and harvesting conditions have been adhered to, the plants must be distilled properly in order to meet YLTG standards. Young Living uses a gentle, proprietary technique for steam-extracting the most potent essential oils, which remains unmatched by anyone in the industry.
To meet YLTG distillation standards, proper temperature must be maintained throughout the distillation process, and pressure, length of time, equipment, and batch size strictly monitored.
YLTG essential oils never have alcohol, solvents, or other chemicals added during the distillation process. And while the common technique of cutting oils may increase yield and decrease cost, it also compromises oil quality – thus cut oils no longer meet YLTG purity standards.
PURITY:
YLTG standards prohibit the acceptance of any diluted, cut, or adulterated oils. Every oil Young Living produces meets strict purity standards.
Every batch of essential oils is subjected to rigorous, state-of-the-art analysis at the Young Living chemistry lab. Using some of the most advanced equipment in the world, our scientists subject every batch of essential oils to gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer testing, and heavy metals analysis. Oils that exhibit even the slightest hint of possible adulteration or tampering are rejected.
In order to continuously assess our oil testing procedures, Young Living regularly sends oil samples to independent labs for analysis. The findings of these trusted laboratories, coupled with years of experience analyzing essential oils, are what enable us to properly calibrate our testing equipment and effectively analyze the results.
POTENCY:
Potency means that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil product are the highest and most consistent bioactive levels.
Ensuring that the various standards encapsulated in the Plants, Preparation, Purity, and Potency approach is the essence of the YLTG standard. Without strict adherence to the YLTG standard in the first three areas, the final product would not have the necessary potency to create the desired therapeutic effect.
In the end, what truly sets Young Living apart is our adherence to the YLTG standard. Through every step of the way, the Four Ps ensure that Young Living products are truly therapeutic-grade from start to finish.
Copaiba is a plant indigenous to South America, where it’s historically been used to provide relief from joint and stomach discomforts.
Because of the rich history surrounding copaiba (or “copal”), Young Living is working to reintroduce this plant back to the western world. Young Living gas chromatograph testing lends support to the historical claims, with copaiba showing one of the highest levels of the therapeutic agent beta chariopholene, as well as high levels of gamma elamine and alpha humaline (shown to support DNA health).

Frankincense is a popular essential oil used widely for its support of circulatory and respiratory systems. It’s also thought to assist the body in healing wounds, sores, and ulcers.
Some frankincense distillers have been known to extend their supplies of frankincense by blending it with oils and synthetic chemicals. The YLTG standard ensures that only unadultrerated frankincense ends up in Young Living Products.

Clove: A quick comparison of pure and cut clove oils will highlight the difference in diluted clove oil, and the consequences of adulteration in the diminished therapeutic compounds.
Distilling the stem and leaf will result in the same clove smell, but only by distilling the flower will the highest amount of the therapeutic compound eugenol (an antiseptic and anesthetic) be extracted.
The YLTG standard means that distillation of the flower is the only acceptable means of producing clove essential oil.

Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired?
Are you concerned about your family’s health care in light of unstable world events? Essential oils may be just what you need to get a fresh start! Today is a perfect day to begin enjoying greater health and greater life with the help of Young Living Essential Oils. Because of their highly oxygenating molecular structure, therapeutic-grade essential oils help to nourish, strengthen, support, and restore the cells of the body.
Essential oils are the oldest and most respected medicines known to man. Historical records indicate that essential oils were one of the most important therapies in daily life in Egypt, India, and China, and are mentioned over 100 times in the Bible. In 1992 when King Tut’s tomb was opened in Egypt, liters of essential oils were discovered. After removing a thick waxy substance from the top of the jars, the oils were tested to reveal that the chemical constituents were in perfect condition. If shelf life is important to you, pure, unadulterated essential oils withstand the test of time!
Essential oils are the life blood of plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs. When we cut ourselves, blood cleanses the cut, protects the wound, fights harmful microorganisms, provides oxygen and nourishment for cell regeneration. The same event occurs in the plant kingdom. The clear liquid that seeps from a plant is called the essential oil. These oils are highly antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial and are now gaining the reputation as being the missing link in modern medicine.
Ensure you’ll always have the benefits of Young Living’s therapeutic-grade essential oils on hand with the Everyday Oils Collection. It contains nine of our most popular essential oils and essential oil blends that can be used for a wide range of uses and benefits. This kit contains 5 ml. bottles of frankincense, lemon, lavender, peppermint, Purification, PanAway, Peace & Calming, Thieves and Valor.
Listen to Gary Young as he explains why Young Living oils ARE the Missing Link to better health!
By Melissa Boice, on January 27th, 2009
Essential oils were used in ancient times to lift the spirit and increase the energies of the body. The Bible contains many examples of oils being used to anoint and cleanse the body. The beautiful ritual of applying oils was practiced with the purest intentions in the hope of bringing great joy and relief to both those who gave and those who received it.
The Raindrop Technique is one of Young Living’s most popular essential oil collections. This energizing technique has been used for years as a highly effective method for balancing and rejuvenating the mind and body. The essential oils found in Young Living’s Raindrop collection penetrate the skin and promote energy and vitality. When oils are properly applied to neck, back and feet, this technique can bring about electrical alignment and helps relieve a variety of discomforts caused by imbalances in the body, especially those found in the spine.
The Raindrop Technique, a gentle massage method of “dropping” essential oils on the spine and back, was introduced to modern society by D. Gary Young. His inspiration came from the traditions of the Lakota Indians. A Lakota medicine man named Wallace Black Elk told Gary the story of how the Lakota people used to migrate to Canada each spring. There they would experience the beauty and healing benefits of the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights.

The Lakota people would reach their hands high into the sky, using them as antennas to pull down vibrant energy from the dancing ights. They would breathe the energy level in and push it up their spines. They believed that these enchanting lights had the power to raise their personal energy level and to make them well. In the 1800s, when the borders between the United States and Canada were completed, the Lakota people could no longer travel north to experience the energizing effects of the Northern Lights. So they used feathers instead to raise their energy, brushing them lightly up the spine.
A few years after his meeting with Wallace Black Elk, Gary studied the beneficial effects of therapeutic-grade essential oils on spinal malformities and other difficulties of the body. He was inspired at that time to use a brushing technique similar to what is used by the Lakota when applying the oils. The result is the famous Raindrop Technique, which has benefited thousands.
This collection includes nine 5 ml bottles of Young Living’s essential oils, two bottles of Young Living’s premium massage oils, and an instructional DVD on how to perform the Raindrop Technique.

As the hours of sunshine dwindle and the gray days follow one after another, many people suffer from depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder, what may be a natural biological response to the dark days of winter.
The best remedy for SAD is exposure to full spectrum light banks, and for someone who truly suffers from the disorder to the extent that he or she is unable to function, the investment in the special lighting is a worthwhile expenditure.
However, aromatherapy, with its deep effect on the spirit and on the emotions, may be very helpful. This is the time of year to use your citrus essential oils. All the citrus oils are uplifting and mood elevating. Generally, the citrus oils are cold pressed from the rind of the fruit. Please be aware that all of the citrus oils have the potential to cause sun sensitivity. Do not apply to the skin and then expose yourself to ultraviolet rays, whether outside, with a tanning bed, or in any other form, for at least 12 hours. I like to diffuse citrus oils in my diffuser when I am feeling depressed. When diffusing oils, use a COLD diffusing method. Never heat your therapeutic grade oils. Heating destroys the therapeutic qualities. If you don’t have a cold diffuser, you can put some oil on a cotton ball or tissue. You can even mix oil in a spray bottle with water & spritz the air.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not merely the aroma of essential oils imparts their effects. Certainly, the aroma has a lot to do with the psychological and spiritual effects the oils have, but get the oils on your body to get the full effect of the oil. One of the best places to put therapeutic grade oils is on the bottom of your feet. You can put the oil neat (undiluted) on the bottom of your feet.
Orange oil is a wonderful “happy oil.” It is great to use when you have a group of cranky people in the house. It is very difficult to be depressed when the air is full of the scent of orange. My absolute favorite for lifting the mood is the oil blend Christmas Spirit, from Young Living. Christmas Spirit has orange & cinnamon. It smells absolutely wonderful & can lift your mood almost instantly.

Another oil that seems to banish the blues for many people is Bergamot. This essential oil is gentler, with a touch of floral in its scent. I will only use Bergamot in an airborne blend. It is the most photo-toxic essential oil; you do not want to risk exposure to UV rays with Bergamot on your skin.

This time of year, I get a taste for pumpkin, especially pumpkin pie. In my efforts to make healthier choices, I googled “crustless pumpkin pie” and found several recipes; I picked the simplest one and it was delicious. Not having the crust to mess with, it was also very easy to make.
The problem was that it was too good! I made the mistake of wandering into my kitchen this morning and having a slice of that yummy pumpkin pie. So NOW what? I wanted something else to eat and really wanted another piece of that pie. HMM…
Here’s what I came up with to knock out that craving:
Pumpkin Pie Smoothie
1 cup organic almond milk
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
2 scoops Young Living’s Pure Protein Complete
1 drop of cinnamon oil
1 drop of clove oil
1 drop of ginger oil
1 drop of nutmeg oil
5 drops Stevia Extract
3 or 4 ice cubes
Blend until the ice cubes are completely crushed. Enjoy!
The essential oils really load the smoothie with flavor. Plus, these essential oils are excellent for overall well-being. Cinnamon and clove are antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic. Clove is also the highest scoring single ingredient ever tested for its antioxidant capacity on the ORAC scale. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and an excellent digestive aid. Last, but certainly not least, nutmeg is also anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic and supports the adrenal glands for increased energy.
Caution: Cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg are all anticoagulant, so if you are taking blood thinning medication, please check with your physician before enjoying this taste treat.
Now a bit about Pure Protein Complete: Each serving (2 scoops) provides a whopping 20 grams of top quality, New Zealand whey protein, certified to be free of hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics. It also has a blend of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, has no artifical sweeteners and is very low on the glycemic index. With only 162 calories per serving, it is an excellent choice to support a weight loss program! Try my Pumpkin Pie Smoothie…I think you will enjoy it and feel good!

(Based primarily on notes taken on Gary Young’s talk September 19, 2008, at the first Young Living European Convention, Vienna, Austria)
It has been said that when there is a conflict between reason and feeling, human beings will always side with feeling. According to Gary Young, “99% of life’s decisions are made from feelings.” Therefore, if you want your life to be guided by good decisions that lead to health, happiness, and fulfillment, you need to be aware of and in control of your present feelings and to learn how to release the repressed emotions of the past.
Most of our feelings from day to day are not responses to current happenings. They originate from the programming in cellular memory that was imprinted by the emotional experiences of our past that we were unable to understand, process, and resolve at the time.
These forgotten traumatic experiences function as live programming in our bodies, affecting every aspect of our lives and particularly in the area of how we make decisions. When our thoughts are limited by fears, lack of self-worth, and not feeling good enough for more or better, we make decisions that limit our success. Limited thinking leads to limited decisions that lead to a limited life far short of the God-given potential we actually possess.
By focusing on fixing your feelings, you can fix most aspects of your life–physical, mental, and spiritual. Essential oils are perfect vehicles to help you in this task because their molecules pass directly to the emotional brain and can bring us into contact with the issues we have long forgotten and enable us to deal with them and resolve them once and for all. When we clear our emotional baggage, we clear the way to manifest our true and highest potential.
According to Gary Young, “Thought equals frequency. Essential oils absorb our thoughts. They are registered in the oils as intent. Intent is directed energy. When you apply an intent-energized oil on your feet they can saturate all of your cells within 60 seconds, stimulating creative thinking and pushing negative energy out of the cells, thus increasing the frequencies of the cells throughout the body. In that uplifted state you can create a new desire to be better tomorrow. You have no limitations but those you choose to accept.”
Gary says, “Use the Feelings Kit. Apply feeling oils before work and every night before bed. Do this for 30 days and you will change your life.”
VALOR Put Valor Oil on the soles of both feet at nighttime along with Highest Potential Blend. These blends are effective to erase limited thinking. Valor balances and equalizes the body’s energies thereby increasing oxygen intake to the pineal gland—the seat of our higher intelligence and intuitive faculties. You will wake up in the morning more self assured and more alive to start the day.
HARMONY Massage one drop of Harmony Oil on each of the energy center points of your body. There are seven of them along the spine: Coccyx, Sacrum, Lumbar, Dorsal (heart), Cervical (where neck meets shoulders), and Medulla (hollow place at center base of skull), and Pineal (center of forehead). You can also massage Harmony on the crown of the head. Harmony balances the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems which, in turn, gives us progressive creativity and feelings of confidence. “The biggest sin is not having confidence in yourself,” says Gary, “He who lacks confidence lacks life.”
FORGIVENESS Apply Forgiveness Oil around the navel with the right hand going clockwise several times and think of situations where you need to forgive yourself or others. We beat up on ourselves, but everyone makes mistakes. Yet we struggle to forgive our own mistakes and those of others. Unforgiveness is one of the most common roots of physical, mental, and spiritual disease. Unforgiveness does not make the offending party sick. It makes us sick. Forgiveness is for our own benefit. It is accomplished in five steps.
(1) Forgive yourself for allowing the person to affect your health and happiness.
(2) Forgive the other person for any harm he or she may have caused you. (This need not be done directly with the person being forgiven, but is an inner adjustment on your part.)
(3) Give the other person permission to forgive you.
(4) See the good in the situation.
(5) Be thankful for the experience and the lesson it taught you.
Inhale and apply Forgiveness Oil while going through these steps and repeat as often as necessary toclear the feelings of unforgiveness.
RELEASE Negative energy goes into the blood and then into the liver for cleansing where the toxins can remain trapped. Thus, the liver becomes a storage place for anger, resentment, bitterness, hatred, jealousy, envy, addictions, and a host of destructive feelings. Apply a few drops of Release Oil on your tongue to release the poisons of stored emotions from the liver. Rub Release over the liver area. Drink lots of pure water and do a liver cleanse.
PRESENT TIME When we live in the past or dwell on the future, we are not being productive in the present. Energize three drops of Present Time by making clockwise circles on the oil in the palm of your hand and then apply it to your thymus (the gland just under your sternum or breastbone). Besides keeping you focused on the tasks of today, this can also help you financially by increasing your abundance consciousness in the present.
INNER CHILD “When you are a child all things are possible. There are no limitations,” says Gary Young. “When you find your inner child, you have found your true self. The child in you is your creativity.” Apply one drop of Inner Child onto the pad of your thumb and then place your thumb onto the roof of your mouth. This opens the cranial sutures and stimulates the pineal, pituitary, and other organs of the emotional brain that occupy the space just above the roof of your mouth. Walking backwards while you have your thumb in your mouth looks stupid but it changes the rotation in the pelvis, elongating the spine, and decompressing the discs in your back. Thus, you can clear the nerve channels for energy to flow smoothly throughout your brain and body.
In conclusion, Gary said, “Use the Feelings Kit morning and night for 30 days. You will feel enthusiastic. Your life will be full of excitement. And people will be drawn to you like a magnet.”

The effects of the inhalation method using essential oils on blood pressure and stress responses of clients with essential hypertension
Department of Nursing, Geochang Provincial College, Geochang-gun, Gyungnam, Korea. jhhwang@kc.ac.kr
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of aromatherapy on blood pressure and stress responses of clients with essential hypertension.
METHOD: There were fifty-two subjects divided into an essential oil group, placebo group, and control group by random assignment. The application of aromatherapy was the inhalation method of blending oils with lavender, ylang ylang, and bergamot once daily for 4 weeks. To evaluate the effects of aromatherapy, blood pressure and pulse were measured two times a week and serum cortisol levels, catecholamine levels, subjective stress, and state anxiety were measured before and after treatment in the three groups. Data was analyzed by repeated measures of ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and chi(2)-test using the SPSS 10.0 program.
RESULTS: The blood pressure, pulse, subjective stress, state anxiety, and serum cortisol levels among the three groups were significantly statistically different. The differences of catecholamine among the three groups were not significant statistically.
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the inhalation method using essential oils can be considered an effective nursing intervention that reduces psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels, as well as the blood pressure of clients with essential hypertension.
