Over the past 20 years, Young Living has established itself as a solid company with a reputation for providing exceptional quality essential oils. We have farms in Ecuador, France, Utah and 2 farms in Idaho. We also own distilleries in Utah, Idaho, Ecuador, France and Oman.

Young Living also purchases from trusted co-op farms and distilleries throughout the world. Gary Young and a team trained by him go to our vendors to make sure that every step of the process, from growing, harvesting, distilling, meets Young Living’s rigorous standards.

Companies who want to sell their oils to Young Living are often surprised when our representatives show up because other companies take the vendor’s word for it instead of personally inspecting their operation.

When oil arrives at Young Living, from either a vendor or that we have distilled, it is quarantined until it is analyzed on a piece of high tech equipment called a GC (gas chromatography) that analyzes the levels of chemical constituents in the oils to make sure that they have the proper levels of therapeutic compounds and to make sure the oil has not been altered in any way.

Young Living rejects around 75% of the oils offered to them by vendors. In fact, sometimes we will do without an essential oil for years if Gary and his team can not acquire the quality that his standards demand. That’s why Young Living has not carried birch essential oil for years and helichrysum was not available for a period of time.

That integrity is one of the many things about Gary Young that impresses me. Gary Young will not allow Young Living’s reputation to be sullied with inferior essential oils. He realizes there is more at stake than the bottom line. We depend on our precious oils to do what they are supposed to do. That’s what therapeutic-grade is all about.

Thanks for stopping by my essential oils blog!

I want you to understand that there is a world of difference between essential oils. When I talk about using essential oils, I am referring to 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living. I know there are oils out there that cost less than Young Living’s. You get what you pay for.

If you are like me and care about what you are putting in and on your body, we really must look beyond the price and the catchy advertising. There is a shocking amount of “adjusting” and blatant adulteration that goes on in the worldwide marketplace, including essential oils. In order to know what we are purchasing and using, therefore, it is essential that we know and trust our essential oil supplier.

Here are some questions that you might want to consider when choosing an essential oil company:

• How many years has the company been working with essentials oils?
• Does the company own and operate its own essential oil research farms? If so, how many farms?
• Is the company proficient in distilling oils?
• Does the company test essential oils to ensure that there are no adulterations? Do they use in-house labs to test each batch? Do they use independent labs to validate their own findings?
• What does the company do in its processes and procedures to guarantee accurate plant identity and oil purity?
• Does the company routinely visit its suppliers to ensure the best manufacturing practices are followed?
• How has the company established its oil standards? How do they know they are selling oils containing the right amounts of constituents to be effective?
• Does the company have in-house expertise and commitment to quality assurance?

In the next few blog posts, I will be addressing the aforementioned questions, giving you details as to why I am convinced that Young Living Essential Oils sets the standard for quality therapeutic grade essential oils and are worth their price in gold.

You may be buying lavender essential oil to treat dermatitis or tea tree oil to help with blemishes, but are you sure you are getting the real deal? Up to 90 percent of products sold as pure plant oils actually contain synthetic ingredients.

To be sure you are using unadulterated essential oils and essential oil products (and therefore getting the full healing properties), take a closer look:

1. Do a water check. Add a drop of essential oil to a tablespoon of water. If a milky slick appears, the oil is likely synthetic and mixed with other ingredients.

2. Take a blot test. Place a drop of oil on paper. If the paper has a grease stain after two hours, the essential oil probably has been diluted with vegetable oils. This test is for oil singles. Blends usually have a carrier oil which will leave an oil stain. Oil singles, such as lavender of tea tree oil should not have vegetable oil in the bottle.

3. Read the Label. You are NOT looking for the word “PURE” or “100% PURE.” Pure just means the oil was not diluted with a lesser quality essential oil. For example: lavender oil is often cut with lavendin, which has very little therapeutic quality. “Pure” does not mean it has no chemicals added to it. In the U.S., all you need is 5% of essential oil in the bottle in order to label it “100% pure.” You are looking for the words “GRADE A” or “GENUINE & AUTHENTIC”.

Young Living goes to great measures to insure that we have the highest quality essential oils. The best part is YOU can enjoy them too by becoming a member of Young Living!

by D. Gary Young

Aromatherapy is a phrase coined by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, Ph.D., in 1920, who was a French cosmetic chemist. While working in his laboratory, he had an accident that resulted in a third degree thermal burn of his hand and forearm. He plunged his arm into a vat of lavender oil, thinking that it was water. To his surprise, the burning slowly decreased and then stopped within a few moments. Over a period of time, with the continual application of lavender oil, the burn healed completely without a trace of a scar. As a chemist, he analyzed the essential oil of lavender and discovered that it contained many substances referred to as chemical constituents or chemical properties. As a result of this, Dr. Gattefosse determined that essential oils contained tremendous healing properties.

Dr. Gattefosse shared his experience with his colleague and friend, Dr. Jean Valnet, a medical doctor in Paris, France. During World War II, while serving as a medical physician in the French Army at the China Wall, treating war victims, Dr. Valnet ran out of antibiotics, so he decided to try using essential oils. To his amazement, they had a powerful effect in reducing and even stopping the infection, and he was able to save many of the soldiers who otherwise might have died even with antibiotics.

Dr. Valnet had two students who did their internship with him who were responsible for expanding his work, Dr. Paul Belaiche and Dr. Jean Claude Lapraz. They discovered that essential oils contain antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties as well as being powerful oxygenators with the ability to act as carrying agents in the delivery of nutrients into the cells.

For example, if you take a geranium plant and tear the leaf or the stem, a clear liquid will appear. This liquid is a very subtle and volatile essence that exudes from the damaged tissues of the leaf. So it is with the human body. With a cut or scrape, we see the flow of blood from that opening in the skin.

One significant difference between the blood and the plant liquid is the color. In the resin or oil being released from the plant, we find trace elements of nutrients, hormones, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antibodies, and antifungal, antibacterial, anti-infectious, antiseptic, and immune-stimulating properties. Another key agent found present in that resin is OXYGEN. Oxygen molecules are part of the chemical elements of the resin, such as alcohols, phenols, esters, sesquiterpenes, terpinols, etc., which together create an essential oil. The plant releases the oil in order to clean the break, kill bacteria and start the regeneration process. When blood is released because of broken skin, it is for the same purpose: to clean the wound, kill the bacteria, prevent infection, and begin the healing and regeneration process. A simple comparison of the plant and the human body shows us a precise similarity, as both the oil and the blood are the transporters of the fundamental nutrients necessary to feed and nurture the cells.

Furthermore, the essential oil has the ability in its chemical structure to penetrate the cell wall and transport oxygen and nutrients inside the cell, thus increasing cellular oxygen and giving more support to the immune system. Research has shown that with their immune-stimulating properties, essential oils enhance and support the building of the immune system, whether they are inhaled or rubbed on the body topically. Even those who contract a cold or the flu recover 70 percent faster using essential oils.

It has been said that when essential oils are diffused in the home, they have the ability to increase the atmospheric oxygen, as they release oxygenating molecules into the atmosphere. Oils increase ozone and negative ions in the home, which inhibit bacteria growth. This prevents and destroys existing odors from mold, cigarettes, animals, etc. Essential oils have the electrical magnetic attraction to fracture the molecular chain of chemicals and take them out of the air, rendering them non-toxic to the body. Scientists in European countries have found that essential oils will bond to metallics and chemicals and carry them out of the body, working as natural chelators, inhibiting these toxic substances from staying in the tissues. Essential oils remove dust particles out of the air and, when diffused in the home, can be the greatest air filtration system. These are all wonderful attributes of essential oils.

Essential oils can be extracted from plants, trees, seeds, flowers, petals, stems, roots, bark, or even the whole plant. Today, about 200 different types of oils are being distilled with several thousand chemical constituents and aromatic molecules that have been identified and registered. These aromatic Substances and compounds within the oils will alter and change based on weather conditions, climate, temperatures, and distillation factors. Today, 98 percent of essential oils are used in the perfume and cosmetic industry.

Essential oils are recognized as being the greatest substances for increasing cellular oxygen through their normal function. When applied to the body by rubbing on the feet, essential oils will travel throughout the body and affect every cell, including the hair, within 20 minutes. They may have a lasting effect for as long as five months from only one application. The oils do not build up and store in the body because they are very subtle and volatile and have a high evaporation rate. Because of their chemical structure, they are metabolized like other nutrients in the cells.

One of the causes of disease in both the plant and the human body is the inability of nutrients to penetrate the cell wall, causing cell deterioration, leading to cell mutation, creating a host for bacteria and disease.

The integral part of the nose responsible for odor detection is the olfactory, consisting of two membranes, one on each side of the mucous membrane covering the bony extension of the nose. The olfactory membranes are very tiny and are well protected by the casing of the nose. They contain about 800 million nerve endings for processing and detecting odors. These nerve endings are triggered from a signal from the genes along the inside passage of the nose. The olfactory hair-like nerves receive the micro-fine, vaporized oil particles, carrying them along the axon of the nerve fibers, connecting them with the synapse of the secondary neurons in the olfactory bulb. The impulses carried to the limbic system and the olfactory sensory center at the base of the brain, pass between the pituitary and pineal gland and then to the amygdala, which is the memory center for fear and trauma. The impulses then travel to the gustatory center where the sensation of taste is perceived.

Only in 1989 was it discovered that the amygdala plays a major role in storing and releasing emotional trauma, and only odor or fragrance stimulation has a profound affect in triggering a response with this gland. Dr. Joseph Ledoux, of the New York Medical University, feels that this could be major break-through in releasing emotional trauma.

People who have turbinate problems, such as a deviated septum, polyps, or who have had nose surgery, may have a very difficult or impossible time detecting the complete odor. The same holds true for people who have worn a lot of make-up, perfume and cologne or used hair sprays, hair colorings, perms and other products with synthetic odors. Many olfactory hairs respond to only one kind of odor molecule, and simultaneously others will respond to several different kinds of odors. This tells us that not all of the receptors are stimulated at the same time in the presence of odorous vapors.

The olfactory nerves are very much like other nerves and organs in the body. They also respond to electrical signals and impulses that form coded messages that are dispatched to various areas of the body. This may be why some oil inhalation will increase endorphin, neurotransmitter and antibody production.

Fragrance is one of man’s greatest enjoyments, bringing back memories of past experience and creating a feeling of security, grounding and well-being.”

Young Living’s goal has always been to share the health benefits of true essential oils with the world. This goal involves knowing which essential oils are truly therapeutic-grade and which are inferior. In fact, when Young Living inspects potential oils from partner distilleries, more than 70 percent fail to meet our stringent standard for potency. In other words, without the exact blend of naturally-occuring plant chemicals – the Young Living Therapeutic Grade standard – an essential oil can lose much of its therapeutic properties and fail to produce the desired effect.

1. Every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired therapeutic effect.

The key to producing true Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) essential oils begins with each plant. An oil’s potency can be affected not only by selecting the proper plant to cultivate, but also where the plant is grown, the quality of soil in which the seed is planted, and even the time of day it’s harvested.

Young Living has extensive experience selecting the correct species of plant for desired oil potency, planting under optimal conditions, using ideal soil and natural methods to encourage growth, and knowing the precise time to harvest each crop. We select only those plants that produce the most active and widest array of constituents. Only plants that meet our standard are used, otherwise no amount of preparation can extract YLTG oils. Young Living will continue to perfect growing and harvesting techniques using our network of farms in Idaho, Utah, France, and Ecuador.

Once the optimal soil, plant, cultivation, and harvesting conditions have been adhered to, the plants must be distilled properly in order to meet YLTG standards. Young Living uses a gentle, proprietary technique for steam-extracting the most potent essential oils, which remains unmatched by anyone in the industry.

To meet YLTG distillation standards, proper temperature must be maintained throughout the distillation process, and pressure, length of time, equipment, and batch size strictly monitored.

YLTG essential oils never have alcohol, solvents, or other chemicals added during the distillation process. And while the common technique of cutting oils may increase yield and decrease cost, it also compromises oil quality – thus cut oils no longer meet YLTG purity standards.

PURITY:

YLTG standards prohibit the acceptance of any diluted, cut, or adulterated oils. Every oil Young Living produces meets strict purity standards.

Every batch of essential oils is subjected to rigorous, state-of-the-art analysis at the Young Living chemistry lab. Using some of the most advanced equipment in the world, our scientists subject every batch of essential oils to gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer testing, and heavy metals analysis. Oils that exhibit even the slightest hint of possible adulteration or tampering are rejected.

In order to continuously assess our oil testing procedures, Young Living regularly sends oil samples to independent labs for analysis. The findings of these trusted laboratories, coupled with years of experience analyzing essential oils, are what enable us to properly calibrate our testing equipment and effectively analyze the results.

POTENCY:

Potency means that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil product are the highest and most consistent bioactive levels.

Ensuring that the various standards encapsulated in the Plants, Preparation, Purity, and Potency approach is the essence of the YLTG standard. Without strict adherence to the YLTG standard in the first three areas, the final product would not have the necessary potency to create the desired therapeutic effect.

In the end, what truly sets Young Living apart is our adherence to the YLTG standard. Through every step of the way, the Four Ps ensure that Young Living products are truly therapeutic-grade from start to finish.

Because of the rich history surrounding copaiba (or “copal”), Young Living is working to reintroduce this plant back to the western world. Young Living gas chromatograph testing lends support to the historical claims, with copaiba showing one of the highest levels of the therapeutic agent beta chariopholene, as well as high levels of gamma elamine and alpha humaline (shown to support DNA health).

Some frankincense distillers have been known to extend their supplies of frankincense by blending it with oils and synthetic chemicals.
